11+ Preparation: A Year-by-Year Guide for Parents

By Laura Harrison, 27 October 2026

The 11+ is used by grammar schools and some independent schools to choose pupils at age eleven. Tests are usually taken at the start of Year 6, so preparation often begins in Year 5, sometimes earlier. Here is a simple, calm way to think about it.

First, find out what your schools use

11+ tests are not the same everywhere. Depending on the area and the school, they can include Maths, English (comprehension and sometimes creative writing), verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Check each school's admissions page and register for the test in good time.

Year 4: strong foundations

There is no need for exam papers yet. Focus on reading widely, learning times tables thoroughly and building confidence with written methods in maths. Reading for pleasure does more for vocabulary than any word list.

Year 5: learning the formats

This is when most families start structured preparation. Children meet each type of question, learn strategies for reasoning puzzles and start short, timed practice. Little and often works better than long sessions.

Summer before Year 6: practice under real conditions

Full practice papers, timing and reviewing mistakes. Keep at least one day a week completely free. Rest is part of preparation.

Keep it positive

The 11+ is one route, not the only one. Children do their best when they feel supported rather than pressured, and when their effort is praised more than their scores.

When a tutor helps

A tutor can fill gaps in maths or English, teach reasoning strategies and make timed practice feel normal rather than frightening. Look for a qualified teacher who knows the style of test your schools use.
