How to Choose the Right Tutor for Your Child

By Laura Harrison, 4 April 2026

Why Tutor Selection Matters

Finding the right tutor can be the difference between a frustrating experience and a genuine academic breakthrough. A great tutor doesn't just know their subject. They know how to teach it to your specific child.

Qualifications: The Baseline

At a minimum, look for a tutor who has:

  • A degree (or higher) in the relevant subject
  • Formal teaching experience or a teaching qualification
  • An enhanced DBS check (essential for anyone working with children)
  • Verifiable references or reviews

At Education Lifeguards, we verify all of the above before any tutor joins our platform. You can trust that every tutor you see has passed our checks.

Teaching Style Matters

Ask yourself: how does my child learn best? Some students need a patient, step-by-step approach. Others thrive with challenge and debate. A good tutor will adapt their style. Ask them directly how they tailor sessions to different learners.

Questions to Ask Before Booking

  1. What is your experience with students at this level?
  2. How do you assess where a student is and set a learning plan?
  3. How do you communicate progress to parents?
  4. What happens if my child doesn't connect with your teaching style?

Trust Your Child's Instinct

After the first session, ask your child how they felt. Did the tutor make them feel comfortable? Did they understand the explanations? Chemistry between student and tutor is real, and it matters.
